Furfelt
Beaver

In the 17th century castorhats (from lat. castor = beaver), i.e. beaverfur hats were held in such high esteem, that wearing them was an exclusive right of the nobility.

Well, the praise for the quality is undoubtedly still justified and it is a great relief that nowadays any afficionado is entitled to get his or her share of the legend!

Beaver fur is the best felting material available
. The felt is tight yet supple and a beaver hat will hold it's shape far better under rough wear and successive wettings than felt made from wool or other types of fur.

According to the World Conservation Union (IUCN) the Canadian Beaver (Castor canadensis) does not qualify for a more at risk category. Widespread and abundant taxa are included in this category.
